Homemade Fresh Fruit Popsicles

I always loved popsicles as a kid — the juicy flavors, the variety in color, and how conveniently you were able to break them into two– a stick for each half. A perfect way to teach the concept of sharing to kids, right? Although summer is definitely the season for frozen treats, I remember finding a box of popsicles tucked away in the fridge often, even during the cool brisk months of winter.

It is officially summer now, and despite the early morning “June Gloom,” the days have been warm and beautiful. So, what better way to celebrate the arrival of summer than with a variety of fresh fruit popsicles. A true classic. These popsicles are made purely and solely with fruit — no added sugar or other sweeteners. I prefer them this way, but you could easily add a little honey or make a simple syrup to add more sweetness.

These are so easy to make — you don’t even need a recipe. Just process your fruit (and sweetener, if using) in a food processor or blender until thick and pourable. Then add to empty popsicle molds or, in my case, empty yogurt containers and freeze for at least 8 hours. If fruit is too soft to hold the stick firmly, freeze fruit a third of the way or so through, then add stick. You can use whatever fruit you have on hand or experiment with different combinations. This time, for flavors, I settled on raspberry, kiwi, orange, and blackberry-vanilla bean yogurt. Great popsicles. Just a hint if your juice is too soft to hold the stick at first just cover the container with plastic wrap and poke the stick through the hole .When it is all frozen pull off the plastic wrap and enjoy …

My first thought was how would you store this in the freezer, but then it dawned on me, they’d probably go so quickly you wouldn’t have to worry about storing them. I am learning to love light dessert fair this summer and those look exactly like what I’d like. Thanks for the colorful inspiration!

OMG!! lisa this reminds me of my childhood summer times! :) hehe my mom used to make this type of popsicles every summer :) m sure my kids gonna love them all… sooo colourful and pretty :) most of all healthy too :)

In Louisiana we make cold cups using a Kool-Aid mix and freezing them in plastic cups. Just recently i made some cold cups using fresh fruit, honey and their juices. i have to say, they taste so much better than that kool-aid mix stuff. Love fresh fruit!!!

A long, long time ago, there was an older neighbor who made popsicles at her house and sold them for $0.50. It was always so fun to go there and buy one when it was super hot. Of course, the homemade versions are going to be better than anything you grab at the store. Love your blackberry and yogurt pop!

Wow! Your photo Lisa is so beautiful! Your are a marvelous artiste; I should make your popsicles for my dad who is addicted to ice-cream; has to have one every night regardless of quality, it is appalling how much the man loves ice-cream; these popsicles would taste so much better and at least have no added sugar! Heck I would even love them especially in the heat of summer!
Wish I had remembered your recipe for the cherry almond crisp when I set out to make the cake; I will now!

Recycling old yogurt cups for this is such a great idea. I was a popsicle freak as a kid and I think of all the nasty HFCS that I must have consumed. Real fruit puree is definitely the way to go. And gorgeous color, btw.

Wow, perfect choice of fruit Lisa, love those colorful popsicles. Looks very summery, and delicious. Where did you get the mold? I had once long time ago, it was so hard to get the popsicles out. So I gave them away. The one you have here seem really nice. I can see how smooth they are, seem like just glide easily when you un-mold them.

Hi Elra,

I used yogurt containers — Wallaby Organic yogurts. The size is nice for a hearty popsicle. I ran a little warm water over the container to loosen it up an they popped right out.

What a great idea to use yogurt containers. I was using plastic cups but those left annoying lines around the sides. Also appreciate the ease of these.

I just decided to use the yogurt containers on a whim and they turned out ok, so I’m pretty happy. Recycled and economical!
